Andy Burnham calls for unity to "draw a line on a decade of division" at Labour conference
“draw a line on a decade of division”
Reported October 1, 2026 by thejournal.ie. Checked word for word against that report.
At the Labour Party conference, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham used his first conference speech to strike a positive tone and promote national togetherness, saying he would act to keep the United Kingdom intact and move authority from Whitehall to Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England. He did not discuss the Drumcree dispute in Northern Ireland, where the Parades Commission had allowed an Orange Order march on the Garvaghy Road after a ban in place since 1998; protesters blocked the parade on Sunday. The impasse drew extensive coverage in Ireland but less in Britain. Secretary of State Chris Bryant left the conference to travel to Northern Ireland and said the Labour government would work toward peace.
