Brazil’s presidential race is again defined by a contest between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the Bolsonaro family. Lula, the incumbent and Workers’ Party leader, faces Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Jair Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year sentence for trying to overturn his 2022 loss to Lula and is disqualified from running; his son now leads their right-wing faction and wants his father freed. Flávio has promised to tackle inflation and crime and to deepen ties with the Trump administration. The first round is set for 4 October, with a runoff on 25 October if needed. The vote occurs as right-wing candidates have claimed wins in several Latin American countries and U.S. pressure that Lula calls external interference; Lula has accused Flávio of backing U.S. moves against Brazil’s sovereignty.
