“the same enormous sacred meaning to Russia”
Ukrainian forces have intensified strikes on Crimea, targeting fuel depots, infrastructure, and supply routes to pressure Moscow, according to reports. The peninsula—annexed by Russia in 2014 and considered by President Vladimir Putin a historic and strategic asset—has faced widespread electricity outages, fuel rationing, and disrupted water supplies. In a recent interview, Putin addressed the situation, assuring residents that needs would be met and promising to increase deliveries by sea and land. The only remaining supply corridor, the Kerch Strait Bridge, remains vulnerable to attack. Putin has long attached profound symbolic importance to Crimea; in 2014 he compared its significance for Russia to that of Jerusalem’s holy sites for Jews and Muslims. The current campaign has forced Russia to relocate much of its Black Sea fleet from Sevastopol and has heightened wartime uncertainty in the region.
