“permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland”

On Oct. 14, Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post that oil, gas and mineral exploration was in preparation in Greenland, Denmark’s autonomous territory. He cited the island’s strategic value, saying future attacks on the U.S. would pass through it and U.S. defenses could intercept threats there. Trump said an agreement revising a 1951 U.S.-Denmark defense pact would give Washington an enduring security role and address other American priorities in Greenland. The agreement upholds Denmark’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and Greenland’s self-determination, while limiting non-NATO or non-EU states and investors from controlling, influencing, or accessing information that could threaten security or public order. Published terms did not specify exploration provisions, but recognized cooperation on minerals and development. Separately, Critical Metals Corp said Greenland approved its Tanbreez rare-earth project through 2050.
