“a real prospect of ending this war”
US President Donald Trump is set to sit down with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and Syria’s Ahmad al-Sharaa on Wednesday during a NATO summit in Ankara, the White House announced. The talks come as Kyiv tries to keep Trump engaged in the conflict with Russia, now in its fifth year. Over the weekend, both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with Trump by phone, congratulating him on the U.S. independence anniversary. According to Zelensky’s social-media statement, the two discussed frontline conditions—where analysts note Russian momentum has stalled and Ukraine has struck deeper into Russian territory—and the Ukrainian president said there is genuine potential to halt the fighting. That discussion, he added, will continue at the summit.
