Trump says New Mexico should "immediately change its name" to New America

President Donald Trump renewed a push for New Mexico to adopt a different state name centered on America rather than Mexico, posting on Truth Social that such a change would lift property values and incomes and increase residents’ pride. He offered no explanation for those claims, and he also asserted without evidence that the state’s elections are corrupt. The proposal follows an earlier suggestion he made last month and remarks at the RNC Midterm Convention on Sept. 9, where he said it was popular. New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, pushed back on the idea, saying the name predates the United States and accusing the White House of distraction from child care, education, health care and housing. The state constitution specifies the name, and Trump has separately moved to rename Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico.
