“we can only lose the midterms”
During a Friday night speech at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, President Donald Trump shifted from warning about a supposed communist threat to discussing the upcoming November midterm elections. He told the crowd that Republicans could lose those elections only if they acted foolishly. Trump then argued that his party could dominate for a century if the Senate eliminated the filibuster and enacted the SAVE America Act, which would tighten voter identification and citizenship requirements. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who was present, has previously vowed to protect the filibuster and recently stated there are not enough votes to remove it. Trump also recently refused to sign a bipartisan housing bill until the SAVE Act reaches his desk, escalating a standoff with congressional Republicans over election legislation.
