Anthony Albanese says public debate is being distorted by "the language of grievance and violence"
“the language of grievance and violence”

While leading parliamentary tributes to independent MP Helen Haines, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese cautioned that public debate is being distorted by mounting anger and by growing acceptance of hostile rhetoric. Haines, who represents Indi, is in stable condition after both legs were amputated following an alleged intentional attack in which a four-wheel-drive vehicle hit her multiple times outside her Wangaratta office in northern Victoria on Oct. 19. Albanese also praised bystanders, witnesses and medical workers who assisted. Parliament opened with additional security in public areas and set aside most of Monday’s sitting, apart from Question Time, for tributes to Haines, reflecting broader concern about aggression in politics.
