“They don’t want to know anything about soccer slash football. Fortunately, they won’t be asking any questions on that. Nobody cares about that, right?”
President Donald Trump, during a White House event promoting new government-sponsored investment accounts for children, dismissed potential press questions about his involvement in a World Cup controversy. The U.S. forward Folarin Balogun had received a red card in his previous match, triggering a one-game suspension. Trump called FIFA president Gianni Infantino and requested a review of the penalty, according to an anonymous source. FIFA subsequently reversed the suspension, allowing Balogun to play. The Belgian soccer federation is now seeking an explanation from FIFA over the decision. At the Oval Office gathering, Trump preemptively told reporters that no one cares about the matter and that he wanted the focus to remain on the child accounts. Critics have argued those accounts do little to address poverty and may widen the wealth gap.
