Albanese says blocking EU trade deal is "protectionist and nativist politics"
“an excuse for going down the road of protectionist and nativist politics”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has criticized political rivals withholding support for a free-trade agreement with the European Union, arguing their resistance risks damaging an export-dependent economy. The deal, completed in March after eight years of negotiations, still needs parliamentary ratification. The government says it would make 98% of Australian goods and services exports tariff-free, lower consumer prices through cheaper European imports, add $10 billion to the economy and support up to $30 billion in trade. Opposition Leader Angus Taylor said it should be reworked, while Nationals leader Matt Canavan and farming groups raised concerns about farmers, and the Greens have not promised support. Albanese said blocking the pact would weaken Australia’s trade position and accused opponents of using the debate to advance inward-looking, domestically focused politics.
