Trump says U.S. recouped "ten times the cost of the war" in Venezuela operation

At a Nov. 1 rally in Dubuque, Iowa, President Donald Trump said the U.S. had recouped an amount equal to tenfold the January Venezuela operation’s expense, according to a transcript of his speech. He offered no detailed financial accounting for that assertion. The remark followed discussion of Iran and came as he said his administration was working with Venezuela to supply millions of barrels of oil to the U.S. The January mission led to Nicolás Maduro’s capture; Cuban and Venezuelan authorities reported at least 56 military deaths, while U.S. sources reported no American military deaths but did report injuries. The report noted that Trump’s financial claim lacked supporting figures and that he also described the operation in terms that conflicted with casualty reports.
