More than 70 British MPs and peers from multiple parties, including members of the governing Labour Party, have sent a letter to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper urging the UK to impose sanctions on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other ministers over what they describe as the systematic torture of Palestinian civilians. The signatories point to a recent United Nations report that found abuse has become routine in Israeli detention facilities. That report, delivered in March by UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese, described the prison system in harsh terms. The lawmakers note that previous sanctions against two Israeli ministers have not changed the government’s handling of Palestinian detainees, and they call on London to help end what they see as impunity. The UK Foreign Office has responded by calling the reports of mistreatment disgraceful and demanding investigations and Red Cross access to all detention centers.
