Trump said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had proposed the change and that arms sales would replace the assistance. He linked the cut to criticism of U.S. support for Israel from Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, saying the aid had become a political problem in a key race against Republican Mike Rogers. The announcement came amid polling that shows growing American doubt about support for Israel and appeared timed for voters concerned with Gaza and foreign policy. Netanyahu had previously discussed reducing aid over ten years, but Trump’s plan would do so much sooner.
