U.S. President Donald Trump stated Monday that a settlement to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine is nearer than most observers believe, speaking after weekend phone conversations with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump offered no evidence for his optimism, even as an overnight Russian missile and drone assault on Kyiv and its surroundings killed at least 28 people. The remarks came ahead of this week’s NATO summit in Turkey, where Trump is scheduled to meet with Zelensky and plans to discuss the war. A Kremlin spokesperson said Moscow sees no change in the U.S. stance. Zelensky, however, told the Financial Times he perceives Trump now views the fighting differently given Ukraine’s recent military gains.
