On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X about the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Fast Track Special Courts, which is being extended for five years. The scheme, with a total outlay of Rs 3,788.04 crore, will increase the number of fast track special courts from 779 to 850 across the country. Each court will have a dedicated judicial officer, a special public prosecutor, and six support staff to handle rape and POCSO cases. Launched in October 2019 following the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2018 and Supreme Court directions, the scheme operates in 29 states and Union Territories and has disposed of 402,457 cases. The extension aims to reduce case backlogs, speed up trials for sexual offences, and create a more child-friendly and victim-focused court setting. The Department of Justice will coordinate implementation with state governments.
