“crisis of extraordinary magnitude”
The US Supreme Court ruled that President Donald Trump may proceed with ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nationals from conflict-ridden countries, potentially stripping more than 350,000 Haitians of their work permits and legal residency. Haitian immigrants and advocacy groups warn that returning to Haiti is extremely dangerous due to rampant gang violence that has killed over 2,300 people this year and displaced 1.5 million. During a recent visit to the country, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres characterized the conditions there as a “crisis of extraordinary magnitude,” citing the pervasive insecurity and terror inflicted by armed groups. The ruling places many Haitian TPS holders at risk of deportation to a nation still suffering severe instability.
