“more and more extreme positions”
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the government is prioritizing stronger enforcement of the country’s social media ban for users under 16, after the eSafety commissioner said the current law had limited authority and companies were not fully complying. Responding in parliament to a question from independent MP Allegra Spender about giving users the ability to opt out of algorithmic content curation, Albanese noted that recommendation systems can gradually steer users—both children and adults—toward increasingly radical material, including hateful propaganda. He said lawmakers must address digital harms, and the government is also considering a broader “duty of care” requiring platforms to proactively prevent foreseeable harm. No fines have been issued despite apparent violations since the ban took effect in December.
