“followed our social media ban”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese noted during parliamentary questioning that several other nations have adopted similar restrictions following Australia’s pioneering law barring under-16s from social media platforms. Since December, major sites like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok have faced fines of up to AUD$49.5 million for noncompliance, but no penalties have yet been issued despite apparent violations. The country’s eSafety commissioner had described the existing legislation as having “very thin scaffolding.” In response, Albanese confirmed the government is prioritizing stronger enforcement measures to curb what he called the unchecked influence of large tech companies. He also indicated that algorithms’ role in pushing extreme content is under review as part of a broader plan to introduce a digital duty of care requiring platforms to prevent foreseeable harm.
