“We have a very good relationship. … Why wouldn't we do that?”
At the NATO summit in Ankara, President Trump met Tuesday with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and raised the possibility of selling F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, even though a ban from Congress currently blocks such a sale. Trump characterized the U.S.-Turkey relationship as strong and questioned why the deal would not proceed. His remarks came amid broader tensions at the gathering: Trump declared the Iran ceasefire effectively finished after fresh exchanges of fire, criticized European allies for insufficient defense spending and support in the U.S.-led war with Iran, and again pushed for U.S. control of Greenland. The F-35 discussion underscores friction between the Trump administration and Congress over Turkey policy.
