The U.S. State Department subsequently deployed a disaster team and arranged search-and-rescue units, medical supplies, and other aid. Several other nations also offered assistance. Rodríguez declared a state of emergency, set up a $200 million reconstruction fund, and urged unity. The quakes, a 7.2-magnitude foreshock followed by a 7.5-magnitude event, were the strongest to hit Venezuela since 1900, with potential deaths estimated in the thousands.
