“a period of extreme de-escalation”
At a NATO summit in Ankara, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney labeled Iran’s conduct “irresponsible” after Tehran struck commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz during a six-day mourning period for its slain Supreme Leader. Carney described that mourning window as one of sharp reductions in hostilities. The U.S. military responded with fresh strikes against Iran early Wednesday, and President Donald Trump subsequently declared the ceasefire “over.” Carney endorsed Washington’s reaction as appropriate, while NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte called the U.S. action “absolutely necessary” given Iran’s ceasefire violations. Several allies expressed caution about further escalation. The development, which follows the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in U.S.-Israeli strikes, has upended the peace deal reached last month and dominated the alliance’s agenda.
