“two states hostile to each other”
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised weapons tests on Thursday, the 76th anniversary of the 1950–53 Korean War, state media reported Friday. The exercise evaluated an upgraded 240mm multiple rocket launcher, a specialized warhead for tactical ballistic missiles, and extended-range shells for a 155mm howitzer—all systems designed to strike South Korean targets. Kim expressed satisfaction, stating the tests demonstrated technical progress amid shifting border firepower positions and that keeping adversaries in constant unease is a key component of deterrence. The tests follow Kim’s late-2023 declaration that inter-Korean relations are those of “two states hostile to each other,” after which North Korea formally designated the South as its primary adversary and accelerated upgrades to artillery and missile systems capable of hitting the South.
