“radical-left, bad people”
The Trump administration is seeking international cooperation against the loosely organized “antifa” movement, which it has labeled a resurgence of transnational far-left terrorism. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly invited foreign ministers from over 60 nations—including most European countries, major Latin American states, and several Asian nations—to a meeting aimed at coordinating efforts. Some foreign and domestic officials, however, have expressed concern that the initiative is actually intended to suppress political dissent at home, particularly against President Donald Trump, while right-wing extremist threats receive less attention. Trump himself has previously described antifa protesters as “radical-left, bad people,” a label he used during the 2020 racial-justice demonstrations. If the administration succeeds in classifying antifa as an international terrorist group, it could enable expanded surveillance of Americans based on loose associations, raising civil-liberties alarms.
