“The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue 'talks.' We have agreed to do so, but the United States has stated to them, in no uncertain terms, that the ceasefire is over!”
Pakistan’s UN ambassador urged Iran and the United States on Friday to uphold the framework peace deal signed last month, warning at a Security Council briefing that any break in diplomacy would worsen the nuclear standoff. The appeal came hours after President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform that Iran had requested continued negotiations and the U.S. accepted, but he also declared that the ceasefire between the two countries, reached in June, was no longer in effect. Trump’s statement follows the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which had established a diplomatic track and included an initial truce. The ambassador stressed that only sustained dialogue can resolve outstanding issues, as regional tensions remain high.
