The announcement came after a week of renewed hostilities, including attacks on commercial tankers near the Strait of Hormuz and reciprocal US and Iranian strikes. Trump threatened a massive military response if Iran tries to assassinate him, saying he had already ordered the US military to be prepared for a year-long campaign to destroy Iranian territory. His remarks followed reports that Israel had shared intelligence about an alleged Iranian assassination plot, as well as funeral gatherings for slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei where attendees displayed banners calling for Trump’s death. Meanwhile, Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei vowed revenge for his father’s killing, and Iranian diplomats traveled to Oman to discuss safe passage through the strategic waterway.
