“If Retailers don't do this, big problems lie ahead!”
President Donald Trump has publicly demanded that U.S. gasoline retailers lower their pump prices to roughly two dollars and fifty cents a gallon, arguing that crude oil near sixty-eight dollars a barrel should translate to much cheaper fuel. Writing on Truth Social, Trump warned that “big problems lie ahead” if stations do not comply, according to Reuters. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reinforced the message on Fox News, telling the fuel supply chain—from major oil companies to independent stations—that the administration is monitoring prices and expects savings to reach drivers before the July Fourth holiday. Bessent also claimed retailers booked record profits during the recent price surge and now owe consumers relief. The pressure campaign comes as crude has fallen sharply from wartime highs, yet the national average pump price, at roughly three dollars ninety-one cents per gallon, has dropped only slowly. With a record seventy-two million Americans expected to travel over the holiday, the White House has turned a familiar pattern of lagging retail prices into a direct political deadline.
