“to more effectively establish sovereignty throughout Lebanese territory”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced additional funding for Lebanon’s military after Israel and Lebanon signed a framework agreement in Washington on June 26, 2026, aimed at ending hostilities between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah. The deal, signed by both countries’ ambassadors alongside the U.S., was described by all parties as an initial step. Rubio stated the U.S. would provide $100 million in immediate humanitarian aid and more than $30 million in existing funds to strengthen the Lebanese Armed Forces, part of Washington’s effort to help Beirut assert control across its territory. The conflict began in March 2026 after Hezbollah fired on Israel following U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, leading to Israeli ground operations that killed over 4,000 in Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said the deal allows Israeli forces to remain in southern Lebanon if Hezbollah fails to disarm.
