“So what makes it even stranger is that I got a call last night sometimes in, you know, the early evening, maybe in the 7 [o’clock range]. ... He got back, said he just landed from Ukraine. I said, 'That's a long trip to make,'”
President Donald Trump made last-minute appearances on NBC’s *Meet the Press* and CNN’s *State of the Union* Sunday after Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina died unexpectedly late Saturday, according to reports. The 71-year-old Republican had been scheduled to appear on the Sunday program. Trump said he spoke with Graham by phone the previous evening, shortly after the senator returned from a trip to Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky. During the call, Graham discussed the SAVE America Act, a legislative priority Trump said the senator was aggressively promoting. Trump stated that Graham sounded fatigued but otherwise fine, and that the two had considered meeting Sunday before he was informed of the death around 1 a.m. Staff told NBC News there were no signs of prior illness. The loss removes a key congressional ally for the president.
