“We're going to go to the media company that released it, and we're going to say, 'National security. Give it up or go to jail,'”
The U.S. Department of Justice and the Pentagon have formed a joint task force to pursue legal action against unauthorized intelligence leaks, announced Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a video posted Monday. This follows President Donald Trump’s earlier threat this April that his administration would demand media outlets that published classified material turn over the source or face imprisonment. Trump was referencing a leak about a missing U.S. airman from a downed F-15E fighter jet over Iran, which he claimed endangered the rescue effort and gave Iranian authorities information that led to a bounty on the pilot. The task force now formalizes the government’s push to identify and prosecute those who share sensitive information with the press.
