“I don't know exactly, but I got a message about 1 in the morning from one of the people in his office that he had passed away. I said, 'I just can't believe it,'”
President Donald Trump has said he received word around 1 a.m. from a staff member that Senator Lindsey Graham had died, and he was taken aback by the news, according to NBC's "Meet the Press." Graham, a South Carolina Republican, passed away at 71 following a brief illness; his office listed an aortic tear as a preliminary cause. Reports state that Graham reportedly put off seeking medical help in order to appear on the same television program. His death has set off a scramble for his Senate seat, with Governor Henry McMaster set to name a temporary replacement. It also threatens to stall parts of Trump's agenda, including sanctions against Russia and a Saudi-Israel normalization push that Graham prioritized.
