“covertly providing support... and are harbouring its members”
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged the United Kingdom and other NATO allies to hand over individuals he links to the 2016 attempted coup, which left more than 250 people dead. In remarks marking the approaching tenth anniversary of the uprising, Erdogan accused some foreign governments of secretly aiding and sheltering members of the movement he designates as the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation, or FETO—the group Ankara blames for orchestrating the putsch. Erdogan called for heightened vigilance and insisted that international cooperation against terrorism remains central to Turkey’s foreign policy. His appeal follows years of unsuccessful extradition requests to Western nations; British courts have previously rejected such demands as politically motivated and warned that suspects could face mistreatment if returned to Turkey, where civil liberties have narrowed under Erdogan’s rule.
