“We CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.’s most important and effective crime-fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!”
President Donald Trump objected to Immigration and Customs Enforcement halting traffic stops after two people were killed during ICE operations in under a week. The Department of Homeland Security paused the tactic following the fatal shootings of a Colombian man in Maine and a Mexican man in Texas. On his Truth Social account, Trump stated that the traffic stop is a critical law enforcement method that should not be abandoned. Homeland Security official Tom Homan said the pause was temporary and the practice would come back. Rights groups identified the Maine victim as a 26-year-old Colombian delivery driver who was authorized to work in the US. Colombian President Gustavo Petro described the killing as a murder. Witnesses have disputed the official account of the Texas shooting. The deaths have fueled criticism of ICE's methods.
