Those polls show that the share of Americans who say religion is very important to them has gradually declined, weekly attendance remains lower than in prior decades, and the percentage of adults with no religious affiliation reached a new high in 2025. While one academic survey noted a slight drop in nonreligious identification, researchers caution that long-term trends still point downward.
