“into a single national framework”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the creation of a new Office of Artificial Intelligence within his department, during a speech at the University of Sydney on Wednesday. The office is meant to coordinate the government's response to the technology across all sectors, rather than handle concerns individually. Albanese stated that this approach would consolidate various issues—such as job displacement, data centers, copyright, and energy costs—under a unified national system. He also outlined plans for binding standards on large-scale data centers to cover their own power costs, and barred companies from using Australian content for AI training without creator permission. The measures aim to attract international investment while addressing public anxieties, with legislation expected early next year.
