“safeguards a vital national capability”
The UK government has taken full ownership of British Steel, a company previously owned by Chinese interests, to ensure the continuation of domestic steel production. This move, which began with the government seizing operational control in April 2025 to prevent the closure of the Scunthorpe plant and safeguard jobs, aims to protect the nation's industrial capacity. The steelworks, the country's sole primary steel producer, faces challenges from high energy expenses and global market oversupply. After failing to secure a private buyer, the government decided to nationalize the firm, which was originally privatized in 1988. A new management team is being installed to stabilize operations and work towards making the enterprise commercially viable and environmentally conscious.
