“"intend to trade it for rule by a self-appointed priesthood of 'international law.'"”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced plans to push for the abolition of the International Criminal Court, laying out his position in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece where he argued that no nation should surrender its autonomy to an external body that supersedes domestic courts and the Constitution. The United Nations, which does not control the ICC, responded by affirming the court's importance in prosecuting genocide, war crimes, and other atrocities, noting broad support among member states. Rubio's effort follows recent US sanctions against nine ICC officials over inquiries into alleged war crimes by American and Israeli forces. The United States is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, the treaty that created the ICC.
