“because it is, of course, our national territory that is under attack every time a fire breaks out”
President Emmanuel Macron said France will not tolerate any deliberate fire‑setting after a series of blazes burned about 35,000 hectares across the country, the largest total since World II, including more than 2,000 hectares in the Fontainebleau forest southeast of Paris. The heatwave‑driven conditions have prompted dozens of arrests; investigators linked one blaze to sparks from road‑repair equipment and have charged the contractor’s manager and two workers with negligent fire damage, while two 18‑year‑old suspects, one a volunteer firefighter, are being held for alleged arson elsewhere. About 1,000 people were evacuated from the forest area. Macron also announced a fundraising effort to restore and protect the UNESCO biosphere reserve.
