“"shocking vulnerabilities in our election infrastructure"”
President Donald Trump declassified intelligence documents and delivered a prime-time address, asserting they expose serious election security flaws. He claimed the materials show China obtained over 200 million US voter registration records and used the remarks to urge Republicans to pass stricter voter ID laws. However, several documents from the intelligence community contradicted his assertions, including one stating vote-tabulation systems would be difficult to manipulate broadly. A 2021 intelligence assessment found no foreign actor altered any aspect of the 2020 election. China denied interfering. Trump’s allegations, at odds with official findings, come as Republicans defend narrow congressional majorities in the upcoming midterm elections. Some major television networks declined to broadcast the speech.
