During a Thursday evening White House address, President Donald Trump accused China of orchestrating what he termed the largest theft of election data in U.S. history, beginning during the 2020 cycle. He claimed the breach compromised 220 million voter files across 18 states. Trump also asserted that intelligence community members—whom he labeled “the deep state”—deliberately concealed the extent of Chinese election meddling from both him and the public. To support his allegations, he cited a CIA report stating that in mid-2018, the Chinese Communist Party aimed to use opposition elements to reduce the president’s votes and force his resignation or prevent his reelection. Trump additionally alleged China worked to influence U.S. business leaders and journalists against him. The address matters because Trump is calling for Congress to pass the SAVE America Act requiring photo voter ID, framing U.S. election systems as deeply compromised and vulnerable to foreign manipulation.
