Donald Trump says he is "holding Canada responsible" for wildfire smoke causing hazardous air in US
“We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their Forests, and Brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable!”
President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on Friday that Canada is failing to manage its forests and brush, allowing wildfire smoke to drift into the United States and create hazardous air quality in cities including Chicago, New York, and Washington. He and several Republican lawmakers have accused the Canadian government of “willful negligence” and said the cost of the pollution should be added to existing tariffs on Canadian goods. Some GOP members, including Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio, have proposed legislation to impose financial sanctions over the issue. Canadian officials and climate advocates note that record-breaking heat and a high number of active fires contribute to the problem, and that the two countries have historically cooperated on wildfire response. Trump said he would speak with Prime Minister Mark Carney about the matter.
