Advocacy group leader Alex Sánchez is questioning how a Nicaraguan immigrant detained by ICE died by suicide in a Mississippi private prison last December, despite being placed in a monitored cell after staff flagged his behavior as concerning. Delvin Rodriguez, a 39-year-old Colorado resident without legal status, had agreed to voluntary removal after his arrest but was transferred to the Adams County Correctional Center. Two days later, he was moved to an open-door cell for constant observation following an intervention by staff. The next afternoon, around 4:15 p.m., he was found unresponsive; he died ten days later. ICE and CoreCivic have released few details. Rodríguez’s death is among 55 immigrant detainee fatalities reported under the current administration, intensifying scrutiny of detention conditions and oversight.
