Trump claimed Burnham had stated he would fully open the region’s valuable offshore reserves. Burnham has not confirmed those reports, and Labour’s 2024 manifesto—which he has pledged to uphold—rules out issuing new North Sea licenses, though the party’s deputy leader, Lucy Powell, indicated a possible shift in emphasis rather than policy. The Rosebank and Jackdaw fields, which already hold licenses, could be approved without breaking that pledge. Trump, a fossil-fuel advocate, also criticized wind turbines in Aberdeen.
