The US military said its latest attacks targeted Iranian coastal watch posts, air-detection systems, naval assets, and depots for missiles and unmanned aircraft, as part of a campaign against the country’s Revolutionary Guard. The airstrikes followed a US soldier’s death in Iraq during a drone disposal and retaliation for a prior strike that killed American troops in Jordan. The stated aim is to reduce Iran’s ability to control the Strait of Hormuz, where ship traffic has nearly stopped. Iran answered by launching missiles at Jordan, raising the risk of drawing in Israel. A temporary truce has fallen apart, and both sides have struck facilities relied on by ordinary people. The conflict has killed 17 US troops and roiled global fuel markets.
