Mark Carney says US tariffs cover "a significant number of Canadian goods"

President Donald Trump issued an executive order imposing an additional 50% tariff on various Canadian products, citing what he described as discriminatory Canadian policies toward American alcohol, automobiles, and dairy. The duties take effect August 19 under a 1930 trade law. Canadian leader Mark Carney responded by saying the new levies cover a broad range of Canadian exports and that the United States has breached the terms of the trilateral trade pact known as the USMCA. Carney stated that Canada’s corresponding tariffs have simply been equal to earlier U.S. duties, including those on Canadian cars. He noted that Ottawa has presented several thorough proposals to address the disagreement and remains open to further talks.
