Emmanuel Macron says France will "be there for as long as is needed" to support affected communities
“be there for as long as is needed”
French President Emmanuel Macron pledged continued government support for communities devastated by wildfires that have forced tens of thousands from their homes and burned vast stretches of land in southwestern France. The fires, which have also swept across Spain, prompted the evacuation of 55,000 more people from six towns near Bordeaux, adding to over 330,000 displaced across both countries. France has deployed military reinforcements to assist firefighters in clearing brush and creating firebreaks. Macron’s promise of sustained aid came as Interior Minister Laurent Nunez warned that evacuated residents and tourists would not be allowed to return until the blaze is fully contained. The fires, fueled by dry vegetation and strong winds, have closed major highways and destroyed over 42,000 hectares in France alone.
