President Donald Trump announced on June 27 that he has nominated Lance Schroyer, a former U.S. Marine and Oklahoma state trooper, to serve as the permanent head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The agency has not had a Senate-confirmed director since early 2017 and is currently led by an acting official. Trump posted on social media that Schroyer’s 29-year law enforcement career, including past work with ICE, makes him suited to step up removals of immigrants convicted of serious crimes. The nomination comes amid ongoing, sometimes violent, enforcement operations in major cities, a 76-day funding lapse for the Department of Homeland Security earlier this year, and a recent three-year funding bill. Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin backed the pick while previously calling for a quieter enforcement approach.
